Stanley Foundation Bipolar Network Stanley Bipolar Treatment Network is a multi-center research effort in bipolar illness (or manic-depressive illness) by some of the most respected mental health researchers in the United States and Europe. The mission of SBTN is to advance scientific understanding of the causes of bipolar illness and to establish strategies for the best long-term treatment of this illness. Clinical research is conducted at various levels of investigation, from academic centers to individual clinicians and their patients. Individuals with bipolar illness provide information on their experience with the disorder and participate in randomized trials of medications under the direction of experienced clinicians. All information collected is kept confidential.  
STEP-BP (Systematic Treatment Enhancement Program for Bipolar Disorder) is the largest treatment study ever conducted for bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness. It is a long-term outpatient project that aims to find out which treatments, or combinations of treatments, are most effective for treating episodes of depression and mania and for preventing recurrent episodes. The five-year project will enroll approximately 5,000 volunteers with bipolar disorder into the care of specially trained clinicians. Select a link below to learn more about the STEP-BD program.

Will I Go Crazy? Will you ever develop symptoms of mental illness? First, you need to know that mental illness is an interaction between your genes and your environment. (Environment means the people and things around you and everything that happens to you). We develop psychiatric problems, such as depression or hallucinations, if the stressors in our environment exceed our level of vulnerability. Our level of vulnerability is caused by our inherited chemical makeup.
