Girls
and Boys Town for Central Florida Girls and Boys
Town of Central Florida is the second oldest and second largest site outside
of National Headquarters in Boys Town, Neb. Since opening in 1986, the
Central Florida site has directly helped more than 12,000 children. In
2001, Girls and Boys Town of Central Florida provided help, healing and
hope to 1,020 children and 220 families primarily through Residential Services,
Short-Term Residential Services, and Children and Families in Need of Services.
Another 14,611 children and families in the state of Florida were indirectly
assisted through Common Sense Parenting® and Project Safe Place, the
Girls and Boys Town National Hotline, and through outreach & professional
training programs.

to various court proceedings & to crime related medical/dental appointments.

SPARCC (Safe Place & Rape Crisis Center) A
private, non-profit agency, that provides services to victims of domestic

for children who have witnessed or experienced domestic violence, &
an educational / therapeutic program for people who batter.

Professor Dr. Robert Friedman Addresses President's New Freedom Commission
on Mental Health On April 29, 2002, President Bush
followed through with his pledge to support the 54 million Americans with
mental and physical disabilities, establishing the President’s New Freedom
Commission on Mental Health. With a goal of advising the President on the
United States mental health service delivery system, the Commission will
meet monthly to provide recommendations and improvements that will enable
adults with serious mental illnesses and children with serious emotional
disturbances to live, work, learn, and participate fully in their communities.

Legally Correct & Educationally Appropriate IEPsThe
Individualized Education Program (IEP) has been the cornerstone of special
education since the Education for All Handicapped Children Act became law
in 1975. We begin this article by examining the relationship between the
IEP and a free, appropriate public education. Then we discuss the IEP process
and highlight the procedural changes and new requirements mandated by the
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act Amendments of 1997. Next, we
present information from a number of due process hearings and cases that
have involved IEPs to illustrate mistakes school districts often make that
can result in rulings against a district, Finally, we provide guidelines
to assist schools with developing legally correct and educationally appropriate
IEPs.

504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is a national law that protects qualified
individuals from discrimination based on their disability. The nondiscrimination
requirements of the law apply to employers and organizations that receive
financial assistance from any Federal department or agency, including the
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). These organizations
and employers include many hospitals, nursing homes, mental health centers
and human service programs.
Tampabay
Academy Tampa Bay Academy is a residential
and day treatment facility for children who have severe psychiatric or
behavioral problems. We also accept deaf students who fall into the above
categories. All of our students have been placed at TBA due to their inability
to function effectively in the community or less restrictive settings.
The Charter School of Tampa Bay Academy was created to act as an adjunct
to that service. Our goal is to provide an educational environment which
will facilitate returning students to a level of functioning that will
optimize their ability to return to a more mainstreamed setting upon discharge.

Sheriff's Youth Ranch (Bradenton/Sarasota) Provides
quality, accredited group child care, counseling and family services for
Florida's children who may be products of physical and emotional neglect,
physical and sexual abuse, and disrupted families. These youth, ages 8
through 17, and who have not been adjudicated delinquent, are often unable
to function well within the structure of their own homes, public schools,
or their community. These youth are not severely emotionally disturbed,
they are characterized by low self-esteem, emotional handicaps, poor social
skills, low frustration tolerance and poor academic success. Provides opportunities
for boys and girls in care to resolve their personal conflicts, find their
identifies, and learn proper values as they work toward a lawful, productive
and secure future.
